The train to Schiphol seems logical, until it's cancelled.
In 2025, there were 586 significant disruptions on the Dutch rail network, confirmed by ProRail's annual report, resulting in a €2.75 million fine after the target of 520 was significantly exceeded. Anyone travelling to Schiphol regularly ran into engineering works or delays more than once. And during a disruption, you're not the only one looking for a taxi: suddenly everyone wants one, and none are available.
But even without a disruption, the train journey to Schiphol isn't exactly relaxing. It's early. You've barely slept. The suitcases are heavy. It's raining outside. You haul everything to the station, find a spot on the platform, stand waiting in the cold, and then the train is packed. With kids in tow, it's a logistical operation before you've even taken a single step toward Schiphol.
A taxi is the opposite. You get up, you get in, you're dropped off at the right departure hall. Warm, dry, no hassle. No parking costs, no platforms, no changing trains. Air travel is tiring enough; getting to the airport doesn't have to be.
Zaandam: the town that became "Z" in the phonetic alphabet.
Zaandam was granted city rights in 1811 during the French period, formed by the merger of Oost- and Westzaandam. Centuries earlier, the town was already closely tied to shipbuilding: in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Zaandam had around fifty active shipyards. That reputation reached as far as Russia, Tsar Peter the Great visited the town in 1697 and 1717 to study Dutch shipbuilding techniques, staying in the small house that still bears his name today.
In 1813, the Zaandam Uprising took place: resistance against Napoleon's forced conscription for his weakened army. Six leaders were arrested and executed by firing squad at the Burcht in Zaandam; their names are now commemorated on the monument in the Verzetsplantsoen, and six streets in Zaandam-Zuid are named after them.
Through the centuries, Zaandam remained a town of innovation: in 1871, Claude Monet painted no fewer than twenty-five works there during a four-month stay, and in 1971 the first McDonald's in the Netherlands opened here, a location considered one of the first in Europe, through a partnership with Zaandam grocer Albert Heijn, whose head office is still based here. Today, the town's name is even embedded in the Dutch phonetic alphabet: Zaandam stands for the letter Z.
