For arrivals from within the Schengen Area without checked baggage, it usually takes 20–30 minutes to leave the terminal. With checked baggage, this is around 45–60 minutes. For flights from outside Schengen, allow 60–75 minutes. With additional border checks, this can take up to 90–120 minutes. Ready earlier than expected? The train from Hilversum to Schiphol seems logical, until it's cancelled.
In 2025, there were 586 significant disruptions on the Dutch rail network, confirmed by ProRail's annual report, resulting in a €2.75 million fine after the target of 520 was significantly exceeded. Anyone travelling to Schiphol regularly ran into engineering works or delays more than once. And during a disruption, you're not the only one looking for a taxi: suddenly everyone wants one, and none are available.
But even without a disruption, the train journey to Schiphol isn't exactly relaxing. It's early. You've barely slept. The suitcases are heavy. It's raining outside. You haul everything to the station, find a spot on the platform, stand waiting in the cold, and then the train is packed. With kids in tow, it's a logistical operation before you've even taken a single step toward Schiphol.
A taxi is the opposite. You get up, you get in, you're dropped off at the right departure hall. Warm, dry, no hassle. No parking costs, no platforms, no changing trains. Air travel is tiring enough; getting to the airport doesn't have to be.
Hilversum: from garden city to media city.
Hilversum was administratively separated from Laarderkerspel on 4 March 1424. Even so, it was never granted official city rights, and original residents still refer to it as "the village", despite its nearly 95,000 residents today. After the arrival of the railway in 1874, Hilversum grew rapidly, and in the twentieth century municipal architect Willem Dudok designed the town as a garden city: green neighbourhoods with a natural transition into the surrounding woods and heathland. His most famous work, the Raadhuis (town hall) from 1931, still stands as a symbol of that approach.
From the early twentieth century onwards, Hilversum developed into the media city of the Netherlands. The establishment of the Nederlandsche Seintoestellen Fabriek in 1918 and the rise of radio played a major role in this. Almost all national broadcasters are still based here today, from the Media Park to the famous Wisseloord Studios, where international artists record albums.
A taxi from Hilversum to Schiphol picks you up at home and drops you off directly at the departure hall, whether you live in the Zeeheldenkwartier, Kerkelanden or Hilversumse Meent. No hauling suitcases, no parking costs, just door to door.
